The Last Carpathian Wolf (1978) By Heinz Konsalik
Four German soldiers, caught in Rumania at the end of the war, spend months in desperate flight through the impassable Carpathians, vainly hoping to get back to Germany. Half starved they live like wolves, ruthlessly hunted by the Russians. Two girls help them; Vera connected with Rumanian partisans and Sonya a farmer's daughter in a mountain village. Three of the Germans are captured, but Michael, a boy of eighteen, holds out. Even after the war, hidden by Sonya and her father, this last Carpathian wolf, is not safe from the new Communist rules of Romania.
