Recollections of the Roving Staff Officer (1993) By John Buckley

As well as his AIF service, the author served on attachments with the British Army in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq in 1941, in northwest Europe in 1944/45 and at Luneberg in Germany in May 1945. In both theatres, he was known as the “roving staff officer”.

He recalls his years of service, and also includes mini-biogs of Herring, Sturdee, and Shedden (the chapter on Alfred and Vernon Sturdee is mainly taken from their notebooks, giving details of the fighting in difficult conditions).

He also includes a chapter that highlights Curtin’s dedicated leadership (Australia’s Perilous Year) and this was originally published in a special edition of the Australian Defence Force Journal.
