Rats of Rangoon: The Inside Story of the Fiasco that Took Place at the End of the War in Burma (1987) By Lionel Hudson

A lesson-known Japanese POW Camp, no less severe than others, imprisoned Allied servicemen in Rangoon Gaol, Burma. The most senior ranking Australian was Wing Commander Hudson. He kept a hidden diary, a brilliant account of the barbarities, hardships and other sufferings inflicted on the prisoners, the brave cleverness of the prisoners and the anxious wait for war's end .or would they all be bombed by the Allies, an absorbing question. Post-war, Hudson caught up with other of the prisoners and several of the captors. He returned to journalism, in south-east Asia for the NBC and eventually to Australia and the ABC when TV started up here.
