Marines At War (1982) By Ian Dear

Each army in recorded history has had its elite from the Roman Praetorian Guard to the French Paras, Alexander's Macedonians to the SAS. Included in any such list of warriors would be the Royal Marines and US Marine Corps, whose actions in World War 2 showed the highest courage and fighting ability against the sternest opposition. The USMC's battles in the Pacific against fanatical Japanese resistance were bloody, slogging fights with enormous casualty figures on both sides -from the heroic defence of Wake Island to the storming of Iwo Jima. The Royal Marines showed their ability to fight in vastly different theatres from the steaming jungles of Borneo, to the beaches of Normandy. In every part of the world, Marines in World War 2 showed themselves to be doughty and fearless fighters on land or water. Marines at War illustrates this fact in graphic detail with action stories and photographs. Taking eight major actions Wake Island, Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Iwo Jima for the USMC; Force Viper in Burma, the Normandy Landings, Walcheren and the Five Rivers Campaign for the RM Ian Dear gives a realistic account of what it was like to fight in amphibious operations during World War 2.

Covers the actions of the Royal Marines as well as the US Marine Corp during WWII.
