March Or Die: The Story Of Wingate's Chindits (2002) By Philip D. Chinnery

World War II story of the British struggle against Japanese Imperial troops in the Burmese jungle. Brigadier Wingate was not the usual product of an army staff college, his approach was to drive the enemy from their hideouts using guerilla tactics with an Indian division known as the Chindits.

A new and comprehensive account of General Orde Wingate and his development of the controversial LRP (Long Range Penetration) behind Japanese lines in Burma, during 1943-44. His plans inserted whole brigades by air and land behind lines to disrupt Japanese communications. This is the story of the deadly struggle between fanatical Japanese Imperial troops and the British army that was fought in the dense tropical jungle of Burma in 1943 and 1944. It was one of the toughest battles of World War Two.

In this conflict, Major-General Orde Wingate was the driving force behind the creation of a new type of army. He employed fighting tactics that were not the product of an army staff college, but gleaned from his previous experiences of guerilla warfare learned in Palestine and Abyssinia. His brilliantly original approach shook the Japanese out of their jungle hideouts. He played them at their own game, taking his troops deep behind enemy lines and using hit-and-run tactics to break communications, disrupt supply lines and shatter the morale of the Japanese Emperor's disciples. The men of this force became known as Chindits.
