Joy In The Caring (1963) By Edith M. Lewis

Born in England in 1882 Edith Lewis came to NZ to live with relatives in 1901. In 1905 she began nursing at Wanganui Hospital, the beginning of a long career in that honourable calling. After a brief return to England, she was there when WWI broke out, returned to NZ via Canada. It was not long before she was overseas again, in Egypt with the NZ Army's medical service. This was to be an interlude in what was to be a distinguished nursing career, overseas visits, positions of responsibility and Matron on the hospital ship Maunganui in WWII. War's end did not mean and end for caring for the sick and injured for this woman, whose services were recogonised with the award of nursing's highest honour, the Florence Nightingale Medal. A remarkable story of a remarkable person.
