THE night Sheik El Hamid picked his cell lock, half-strangled his French Moroccan guards and broke out of his desert prison to find his loyal men waiting with his famous white stallion was a night to remember. El Hamid's son remembered it with pride in the great warrior his father was. A traitorous French Colonel working with the Nazis in North Africa remembered it, too- and cursed that night.
 
 
 
And later, a brave British officer, Captain Dave Steel, put to the worst torture of the desert by that same French Colonel to make him talk-gritted his teeth and remembered with a glimmer of hope that El Hamid, the warrior sheik, was still free, and owed him a life.
