Aircraft Versus Submarine: The Evolution of the Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1912 to 1980 (1980) By Alfred Price

The Evolution of anti-Submarine Aircraft 1912 to 1980" this account of the development of aircraft as a counter to submarines was first published in 1973 with this revised edition in 1980. In his introduction to the second edition Captain John Moore (editor Janes Fighting Ships) described the book as an "excellent analysis". showing that history had a great lesson for today's defence planners. The author takes readers back to the earliest days of aviation and the first thoughts of using aircraft to combat another relatively new weapon -- the submarine. During WWI theory was put to practice with aircraft and airships deployed against submarines. Further developments in the inter-war years are then traversed, leading into WWII with its intensive use of submarines and equally aircraft against them. Coverage of that conflict, and particularly the Battle of the Atlantic, occupies a major part of the book with the final section, 1945 to 1980, examining the rapid advances made in the technology in both fields during the Cold War era. Second revised edition of 1980 from Janes
