This volume of A World Atlas of Military History is the second book to be published in this series and covers the years 1860 to 1945. It follows the same style as the earlier book and Arthur Banks once again demonstrates his unrivalled supremacy in the field of historical cartography. Militarily, the period covered was dominated by one major and two world-wide collisions of arms, namely the American Civil War and the First and Second World Wars. These are examined in detail but much space is also devoted to the numerous minor engagements which enlivened those years. Inevitably in such a work the coverage is bound to be selective and the ill-disposed critic can deplore the absence of any mention of the First Riel Rebellion of 1869! However, it is hoped that the coverage will be wide enough for most historians and students in need of a general military atlas of the period. The book also contains a comprehensive index, a feature curiously lacking in so many historical atlases.
